Smart move
Wednesday, July 13, 2016 by Elizabeth Pagano
Austin Code Director Carl Smart is joining several of his peers in getting out of Austin. On Tuesday, City Manager Marc Ott announced Smart’s impending retirement, which will enable him to become the new assistant county manager in Alachua County, Florida, where he will oversee the county’s Public Safety and Community Services. In the memo, Ott praised Smart’s “significant progress during the past five years in modernizing and opening up the code compliance and enforcement functions.” He continued, “Under his tenure, the department has repositioned itself to be a more proactive department with an increased focus on community outreach and engagement. He was key to developing new initiatives to improve maintenance of rental properties, and has been at the lead of a new Neighborhood Enhancement Team focused on neighborhood improvement efforts.” Ott will appoint an acting director for the department prior to Smart’s August departure and will soon get started on finding a permanent replacement for the position.
