Recall group seeking help at polling places

Tuesday, February 18, 2020 by Jo Clifton

The group seeking the recall of Mayor Steve Adler and five colleagues who were elected or reelected in 2018 (Council members Natasha Harper-Madison, Pio Renteria, Ann Kitchen, Paige Ellis and Kathie Tovo) put out a call on Twitter Monday seeking volunteers to collect signatures for its recall petitions at early polling places around Austin. They say the polling places, known as election centers, “are the ideal place to collect recall signatures because the registered voters who show up there are eligible to sign!” Of course, every registered Austin voter can sign a petition to recall Adler. However, when a voter from District 1 goes to City Hall and decides to vote early there, that voter is not eligible to sign a petition to recall Tovo, whose district surrounds City Hall. It’s not clear who all of the players are behind the latest recall effort. Even though local gadfly Sharon Blythe started a political action committee last year named Our Town Austin, there’s also a new website associated with the petition drive attributed to Citizen Review PAC. That political action committee does not appear on the city clerk’s website. The PAC is listed on the website of the Texas Ethics Commission, but no other information on the committee was available Monday.
