Council scheduled to condemn Confederate memorials
Thursday, October 5, 2017 by Nina Hernandez
At its meeting today, City Council is set to consider a resolution condemning Confederate monuments and memorials, and, further, asking the city manager to recommend a process for either removing or renaming any that the city owns. The city manager will consider street names and buildings on city property, figure out how much removing or renaming the tributes would cost and make any necessary preservation recommendations. In a Wednesday press release, Council Member Pio Renteria said, “These confederate monuments are remnants of Jim Crow era attempts to rewrite and distort our history. The time has come to remove these shameful symbols of division from our public spaces.”
