Central Library grand opening scheduled
Friday, October 20, 2017 by Nina Hernandez
The city’s long-awaited Central Library finally has a grand opening on the schedule. That’s right: More than a decade after voters initially approved funds, the project is complete. There will be an entire day of fun at the new downtown library to celebrate including live music, video games, temporary tattoos and a talk by artist Christian Moeller. The party starts at 10 a.m. that Saturday, with opening remarks and a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m. Here are a few reminders before you head down. West Avenue will be closed from Cesar Chavez Street to Third Street from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. The city expects more than 20,000 people to show up, so it suggests finding alternative transportation. There will be a designated area for ride-sharing vehicles to pick up and drop off passengers on Third Street. And Capital Metro is offering free rides from noon until 5 p.m. Park at a selection of five library branches, ask inside for a free Day Pass and then catch a nearby bus downtown.
