Airport workers seek quality jobs
Wednesday, October 26, 2016 by Elizabeth Pagano
Yesterday, airport concessions workers convened to announce a platform for quality jobs at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. According to a press release about the event, “The platform is rooted in the idea that good jobs at Austin’s airport result directly in
the development of some of Austin’s less affluent neighborhoods by bringing money and stability into those communities.” At the moment, there is a public bidding process underway for concessions operations for the airport’s new expansion, and the airport workers and their supporters are asking that quality of jobs factor into this bidding process. On Tuesday, Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo and City Council members Ann Kitchen and Greg Casar were present alongside the workers, as were representatives from Mayor Steve Adler’s and Council Member Pio Renteria’s offices. “As the owner of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the city of Austin can provide even better service by ensuring our workers have rewarding jobs at the airport,” said Casar. “The people who work in our airport are our constituents, and like all workers, they deserve benefits, job security and a living wage.”
