At midnight public still talking about registration of rental properties

With about 10 minutes to go before In Fact Daily‘s deadline Thursday, Council members were still taking public debate over a pair of proposed rental registration ordinances. Proponents of the idea argue that registration could provide more proactive attention to derelict properties. Opponents say that rental registration could drive rental costs up, while sweeping many good actors up in a dragnet with the bad, and ignoring more pressing issues with the city’s Code Compliance department.

 

The first proposal from Council Member Bill Spelman offered a registry that focused on repeat offenders. The second, from Council Member Kathie Tovo, would call for registries for all apartment owners in the Rundberg, East Riverside, and select University of Texas areas. We’ll have the results of the vote and a full blow-by-blow Monday.
