Spelman, Martinez and Cole find fund raising easy
Friday, April 10, 2009 by Austin Monitor
Former Council Member Bill Spelman raised a significant amount of money in his campaign for Place 5, despite running unopposed. Spelman collected just over $50,800 in the period ending March 30.
Along with contributions from the political action committees representing the Austin Police Association, Austin Firefighters Association, and the Amalgamated Transit Union, Spelman received contributions from local individuals including Book People owner Steve Bercu, former Council candidate Margot Clarke, Kathie Tovo of the Austin Neighborhoods Council, Gary Farmer of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, and Charlie Betts of the Downtown Austin Alliance.
Incumbent Council Member Mike Martinez and Sheryl Cole both have hefty campaign war-chests going into the home stretch. Cole reports receiving more than $116,000 and having over $102,000 on-hand, which includes $40,000 in loans.
