Travis County Commissioners Court delivers new budget and tax rate
Wednesday, September 28, 2016 by Caleb Pritchard
With hardly any fanfare, the Travis County Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved its new $1 billion budget and tax rate for Fiscal Year 2016-2017. The court approved each decision on a 4-0 vote (Commissioner Ron Davis was not present) without much by way of discussion or argument on the dais. The new property tax rate of 38.38 cents per $100 valuation is 3.31 cents lower than the previous rate. That marks the fifth time since 2013 that the court has lowered or maintained the tax rate. The court this year also raised the homestead exemption on older and disabled residents from $75,000 to $80,000. After the final approval of the tax rate, County Judge Sarah Eckhardt said, “Thank you to everybody inside the Travis County mechanism for bringing in a tax rate that does hit the average taxpayer more lightly than even the previous year.”
