New PAC contests mobility bond

Wednesday, September 7, 2016 by Caleb Pritchard

With less than two months to go until Election Day, the ballot’s only citywide contest finally has two opposing avatars. Activists recently formed the Honest Transportation Solutions political action committee in order to oppose the $720 million mobility bond being championed by the Move Austin Forward PAC, which itself is backed by, among other groups, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, Bike Austin and the Real Estate Council of Austin. Honest Transportation Solutions’ membership features its own roster of familiar faces. According to spokesman and Travis County Taxpayers Union member Roger Falk, the PAC’s board includes fellow TCTU-er and one-time City Council candidate Bill Worsham, former Travis County Judge Bill Aleshire, longtime road-building advocate Jim Skaggs, Texas Monthly founder and Public Safety Commissioner Mike Levy and former Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. Falk said supporters of the so-called Go Big Corridor Plan are overselling the benefits to be derived from the vast cornucopia of projects it would fund along highways, arterials and local streets. “They say, ‘Go big’; I say, ‘Big deception,’ because I don’t think people get it,” said Falk. “They’re being misled.” Falk claimed that the plan will not deliver on the congestion relief that is one of the primary promises touted by Move Austin Forward. Honest Transportation Solutions still does not have a live website, but Falk promised one will come online soon.
