Flooding and yet more rain prompt waterway closures

Tuesday, May 31, 2016 by Kayleigh Hughes

Due to current flooding and the potential for even more rain in the coming days, Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr has decided to close access to the following waterways at the request of both the Lower Colorado River Authority Emergency Management Team and the City of Austin Office of Emergency Management: Lake Austin, Lady Bird Lake and the Colorado River downstream of Longhorn Dam. The closures are effective immediately and will last until Wednesday, June 1 at noon, but Michelle Tanzola of the Austin Fire Department notes that it will be evaluating conditions each day. The department apologies for the timing and inconvenience of the closures but emphasizes that “obviously, safety comes first.”
