Council: Keep names of manager candidates secret

Friday, March 24, 2017 by Jo Clifton

On the advice of consultant Steve Newton of Russell Reynolds Associates, the firm hired to help find a new city manager, City Council agreed Thursday to keep the names of people applying for the job confidential. In practical terms, that means the 11-member citizen committee to be appointed by Council will meet with consultants to come up with a job description for the manager but will not be involved in screening candidates. According to Newton, many candidates would shy away from applying for the job if they thought their current employer would learn about the application. A group of activists led by Fred Lewis wrote to Council this week urging them to keep the names confidential in order to attract better applicants. According to Newton’s timeline, Council will not see finalists for another four to six months.
