Chamber of Commerce supports Travis County bond proposal
Monday, October 2, 2017 by Nina Hernandez
Last week, the Austin Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to support Travis County’s $185 million bond package. In a Friday press release addressing the decision, Chair Ellen Wood said the region has to balance its concerns about affordability with making the necessary investments (namely transportation) for continued growth. “Transportation affects everyone’s quality of life,” she said. “We are pleased to see that the county, using conservative estimates, projects this bond package can be repaid without a tax rate increase. We can’t confuse a lower tax rate with paying less tax. As property values increase, taxes do too, but the county believes they can do these projects without raising the tax rate.” Voters will weigh in on the bond in November.
