Austin is officially a big city

Monday, May 22, 2023 by Bob Sechler

Austin is the 1oth largest city in the United States by population, a move up from No. 11 in previous official tallies and the culmination of years of strong growth. With a population of 974,447 people as of July 1, 2022, according to the U.S. Census, Austin edged both Jacksonville, Fla., and San Jose, Calif., by a few thousand residents for the No. 10 spot. “These population estimates show the city of Austin gaining momentum in population growth and continuing to contribute to the rapid growth in the region,” said Lila Valencia, the city’s demographer. Other Texas cities in the top 10 include Houston at No. 4 with just over 2.3 million residents, San Antonio at No. 7 with about 1.47 million, and Dallas at No. 9 with almost 1.3 million. New York remains the biggest city in the United States by population, with more than 8.3 million people as of last July. Meanwhile, the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown metropolitan area was the fastest-growing region in the country among large metros for the 12th consecutive year, according to the latest Census data, adding nearly 63,000 residents between 2021 and 2022 for a growth rate of 2.7 percent.
