Affordable housing breaks ground
Tuesday, August 21, 2018 by Chad Swiatecki
The Housing Authority of the City of Austin and Carleton Residential Properties recently broke ground on the Pathways at Chalmers South housing development on East Second Street. The development is part of a larger project that will be completed in three phases and will add 400 affordable housing units to the community, including larger units with two, three and four bedrooms as well as units accessible for those with special needs. The first phase began last week and will bring 86 units to the Second Street neighborhood. The second phase will be located on East Fourth Street and will begin construction in 2019 or 2020, and the third phase will begin by 2021. Residents in the new housing will have access to on-site workforce development opportunities, education, and health and wellness services provided by local nonprofits. The project is part of HACA’s participation in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rental Assistance Demonstration program.
