Adler, Tovo, Renteria visit Seattle

Tuesday, September 27, 2016 by Jo Clifton

Mayor Steve Adler, Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo and City Council Member Pio Renteria traveled with the Austin Chamber of Commerce delegation visiting Seattle on Sunday and Monday. Chamber Senior Vice President Jeremy Martin described a busy schedule for the visit, which included presentations from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the state of Washington and the city of Seattle. The 95-member group heard presentations on topics that included homelessness, transportation, affordability and working with tech entrepreneurs, Martin said. In addition, he said, the delegation heard from former Gov. Christine Gregoire, who talked about Challenge Seattle, which was modeled after Opportunity Austin, an initiative that is described on the chamber’s website as “a five-county economic development initiative aimed at fostering job-creating investment in Central Texas.” The group also visited the University of Washington medical school as well as the main campus of the university, Martin said. The group was also slated to go to the city of Bellevue and listen to three local mayors talk about collaboration and economic development. A spokesman for Adler said he was returning Monday. The rest of the group is scheduled to return to Austin on Tuesday.
