TipSheet: Travis County Commissioners 7.21.15

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 by Caleb Pritchard

The Travis County Commissioners Court meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Because only three members will be present, they put together an abbreviated agenda that sources say will be swiftly approved in a single vote at the beginning of the session. We’ve posted several of the agenda’s highlights below. The County Clerk’s office hosts a copy at its website.

7. Consider and take appropriate action on a funds allocation request for the construction of Big Sandy Drive at Long Hollow Low Water Crossing Bridge Replacement in Precinct Three. (Commissioner Daugherty)

Monitor’s Take: It appears that a project to replace an low-water crossing with a bridge in northwest Travis County has hit a snag. According to backup documents, the bridge would provide the only means of access to a neighborhood near the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. The project’s budget was set at $822,124 in 2011 but the discovery of a sensitive ecosystem in the area has triggered redesigns in the engineering plans. Staff is asking for an extra $300,000 to cover it.

10. Approve Change Order No. 3 (Contract No. 4400002010), STR Constructors LTD, New Purchasing Warehouse Phase 1. (Judge Eckhardt)

Monitor’s Take: Another project whose initial cost estimate appears to be have too low. This time, the Facilities Management Division is asking the commissioners for another $672,744.55 in the construction of a warehouse. Backup materials indicate the change is due to a contractor’s quote on concrete pouring and other slab-related work.
