TipSheet: Travis County, 5.8.18

Tuesday, May 8, 2018 by Caleb Pritchard

The Travis County Commissioners Court meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday. In the interest of space, we’ve decided not to post the entire agenda here. The County Clerk’s Office hosts a copy at its website.

3. Consider and take appropriate action on the issuance of a mass gathering permit for Lone Star Jam to be held on May 26-27, 2018, at 9100 Decker Lake Road, Austin, Texas 78724. (Judge Eckhardt)

4. Consider and take appropriate action on the issuance of a mass gathering permit for Copa Univision to be held on June 2-3, 2018, at 15500 Sun Light Near Way, Pflugerville, Texas 78660 (Northeast Metropolitan Park). (Judge Eckhardt)

5. Set a public hearing for Tuesday, May 22, 2018, to receive comments regarding the issuance of a mass gathering permit for Anjunadeep Open Air Austin to be held on June 9-10, 2018, at 9507 Sherman Road, Austin, Texas 78742. (Judge Eckhardt)

Monitor’s Take: In a previous TipSheet, we estimated that the organizers of the Finding Euphoria festival would have little trouble navigating Travis County’s slightly new mass gathering permitting process. That, of course, was a foolish assumption, and we apologize for the brief and uncharacteristic optimism. In light of the reporting by our colleagues at the Austin American-Statesman, we’ll be keeping a closer eye – and tighter lid – on this set of potential public gathering permit requests.

8. Consider and take appropriate action on: a. Creation of a Palm School Advisory Board and its charge b. Authorization of a new appraisal of the Palm School site (Commissioners Shea & Gómez)

Monitor’s Take: What do you do with a 126-year-old schoolhouse? Apparently, you appoint an advisory board to hash it out. No word yet on what the composition of said advisory board will be.

24. Consider and take appropriate action on contract with the University of Texas at Austin to use the DKR Texas Memorial Stadium – Red McCombs Red Zone Food Court as an Early Voting location May 14-18, 2018, and as an Election Day voting location for the May 22, 2018, Primary Runoff Election. (Judge Eckhardt)

Monitor’s Take: Our friends at The Daily Texan reported last week that a scheduling conflict is forcing the relocation of the typical University of Texas campus voting booths from the Flawn Academic Center all the way over to the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. For those keeping score, that’s more than half a mile farther from residentially dense West Campus. It is, of course, closer to some parking lots and that talking pump jack.

The Austin Monitor’s work is made possible by donations from the community. Though our reporting covers donors from time to time, we are careful to keep business and editorial efforts separate while maintaining transparency. A complete list of donors is available here, and our code of ethics is explained here.
